It’s a question that you can’t ask without a bucket load of passion behind it: “Are you with me?!” I’ve heard it in some badass movies and from some badass friends. So you know, when a band like our latest feature OTiS, began taking root with this very question… you have a group of guys on the same very passionate page. The NYC-based OTiS is made up of funk, rock and jam induced artists making music for all the right reasons.  Read more...

“Take one part rock, one part soul, and one part groove and you’ve got the Brooklyn based band OTiS.” This is the opening line for the band’s bio and they truly blend the three together. Creating music from influences like The Meters, The Black Crowes and Bob Marley, you can’t feel anything but energized after listening to just a few minutes. Read more...

The Situation - OTiS Album Review

For a lack of a better work-station, my car can tend to become my writing haven. And while sitting in the warmth of my vehicle on a cold winter's night, with the self-titled OTiS album coming to life through my speakers, I am transported into a world of funky grooves.

The Brooklyn, NY based funk and soul band begins their to-be-released CD with the song "All Over Again", which supplies a full dose of groove and starts the music off right. Put into a blender of delight, this song showcases the group's ability to create a nice mixture of fast-pace vocals with poignant and up-beat instrumentals.

Makin' it: OTiS

Up next for TRT’s bold predictions for “makin’ it” in 2010 is Brooklyn’s own OTiS. I first caught wind of OTiS a few weeks back thanks to one of our most reliable tipsters, Jake, who sent me the band’s cover of Pharcyde’s “Passing Me By.”

Did I fail to mention, OTiS is not a rap group, by any means, but lead singer Craig Schoenbaum sure had me fooled, which points to the band’s versatility. OTiS defines themselves with three words: Rock, Soul, and Groove.

OTiS: Self Titled

I’m sitting at a table in a local book cafe on a Saturday night.  I’m being one of those pretentious people sipping on a specialty coffee ignoring the world, focusing only on the glow of the computer in front of me.  My headphones are in, which doesn’t necessarily mean I’m listening to anything – it could simply mean I’m being more anti-social than usual.  It just so happens, however, that I’m going through some of the new music I’ve come across in the past week.  There’s nothing special in the mix, until I reach a new-ish Brooklyn-based band of many colors.

From one song to the next I’m introduced to a different sound, but still relative to the song before.  This is the self-titled debut release of OTiS, a soul/reggae/ska/alternative/groove hybrid with a pop twist.  “All Over Again” intros the album with rock-esq guitar grooves similar to the start of “Last Dance with Mary Jane,” but it’s not long before OTiS lead vocalist, Craig Alan, chimes in with his Jamie Lidell-gone-ska vocals.  By “American Dream,” I’m locked in to the album, enjoying in particular this spotlight on the keys where it appears Justin Etheredge wants to teach us a little something about soul.
